Vittorio de Sica's melodramatic nod to the city where he spent his youth is a beautiful anthology of the everyday fortunes of ordinary people in Naples in the early 1950s. Including De Sica, the cast includes top figures from Italian cinema of the time, such as Totò, Silvana Mangano and the only 20-year-old Sophia Loren. Her luscious cleavage sticks to the retina. Yet I think it is the little one-hit wonder Pierino Bilancioni who steals the show as the bored boy who teaches a fallen count (De Sica) a lesson in playing cards.

Six stories, six gems about prosperity and adversity in everyday life in which drama and humor lie side by side. Highly recommended for several reasons. To my taste De Sica's best film, more beautiful than his famous Ladri di Biciclette (1948).

Ode to Naples through 6 short stories full of urban vitality and life drama. It was palpable and resembles scenes that De Sica heard or saw and that have stayed with him. In any case, this is a film that captures the soul of Naples at that time.

1. Tells about a man who is tired of living under the control of a neighborhood mafioso who "uses" him for all kinds of things and even takes over his home. I thought it was the funniest of the six.
2. Sophia Loren plays a adulterous young woman who, together with her husband, runs a friggitoria (fried pizzas), where the customers seem to be more interested in the busty manageress; until she loses her wedding ring... an omen? Funny how the people involved in that event chase her through the streets.
3. A funeral procession follows through Naples. The contrast of this old tradition against the background of a modernizing city with car traffic must have struck De Sica. A beautiful poignant scene.
4. An impoverished gambling addict count (played by De Sica himself) plays Scopa with a child and goes crazy when he loses ... misfortune suddenly seems to summarize the story of his life.
5. The film "Teresa" with Silvana Mangano is the most drama-laden chapter... She, a former prostitute, becomes the victim of a penitential marriage. Her bitter choice at the end needs no words.
6. The local residents have found the answer to the arrogant duke who comes to bother them every day... oh pernacchio... not just any lip fart.
