Disney Classic #49

From the very beginning, Disney has always insisted on quantity, which does not alter the fact that there have been some improbably strong periods. In the 1990s in particular, it was almost an annual hit. But once you put Chicken Little in the DVD player, that era seems to be decades behind us. Barely ten years after the glory days, we are presented with a second-rate product that is impressive.

It already starts with the presentation: from an animation-technical point of view, the poverty just drips off. No beautiful images or ingeniously designed characters. Apart from the moving fishbowls, I really can't discover one creative tour de force. The street scenes are uninspired, characters interchangeable and I can't remember ever seeing an uglier spaceship. The DisneyToon films often have the name that they seem easygoing compared to the cinema films, but I have not come across anything of this level yet.

Where the predecessor had weak songs, the makers have now made it even easier for themselves: just sideline the songwriters and conjure up a number of dead radio tunes. A few times they are also used to arouse emotions, while Chicken Little is completely devoid of real emotions. From the start, the viewer must find the 'hero' of the story very pathetic, but because you can't get into the character anywhere, that is already a hopeless undertaking.

By the way, I didn't know that there were schools where teachers actively encourage bullying, but apparently a lot has changed in recent years. It's very hard to say anything positive about Chicken Little, and this brings me to my lowest score ever for a Disney movie.

1*

Chicken Little is the first Disney animated film to be entirely computer-generated. 3D computer animation films have dominated the animation market for years, so in 2004 Disney decided to focus entirely on this market. Chicken Little is the first result and unfortunately not too good. The animation is quite poor and can nowhere be in the shadow of the classics of Pixar.

The story is loosely based on the famous fairy tale “The Sky Is Falling”. This had already been filmed by Disney in 1943, also under the title Chicken Little. However, the plot of this new film is completely different. However, the story jumps from scratch and the characters don't come out anywhere either. Chicken Little is therefore one of the lesser animated films in Disney history, despite the sky-high budget of 150 million dollars. The film was mainly negatively received, but nevertheless computer animation films are extremely popular with the public, so that Chicken Little still brought in $314 million, making it the most successful Disney film since Tarzan.

To start on a positive note: Chicken Little as a character was less annoying than I had imagined beforehand. And it's not a Home on the Range.

But that's where the positive things end, Chicken Little is a dragon. Something that immediately jumps out is the animation, which is rare ugly, especially the characters do not look. It seems like I was watching a mediocre game from the 90s for a long time. And to go on with the characters. Chicken Little was not so bad for me, but on the other hand, those friends of Chicken Little in particular were unbearable. Bloody annoying, not funny, and very ugly animated. Combined with a boring, messy story that flew through the screen in a hyperactive way, this was not it for me. Every now and then there is still a nice joke in it, but that was the exception. So cry with the hat on.
