There are two films in the history of cinema that you cannot ignore. Orson Welles' 'Citizen Kane' and Francis Ford Coppola's 'Apocalypse Now' are both so big and acclaimed and therefore already analyzed so badly that you are eagerly looking for critical notes. It is possible to come up with these at times when you are not watching the films, but the following applies to both: as soon as you sit down for it, you will be wrapped up. There are a number of versions of 'Apocalypse Now'. The original appeared in 1979, but the very best is the Redux cut from 2001. The more than 45 minutes extra enhances the tension and lifts the film well above the War film or Vietnam film genre. 'Apocalypse Now' is the depiction of the hypocrisy of life, of breaking the illusion that there is a difference between good and evil and that basically everything under the sun is completely meaningless.

What a movie this is! This film jumps right off the bat with an insane first hour. A great duvall, and the helicopter attack is absolutely great. Then we get the trip on the river in which the madness of the war is beautifully portrayed (only the sex scene was a bit weird for me). Kurtz makes his appearance in the last 45 minutes. With some really scary scenes (greatly done by Coppola and especially Brando. All in all this is really one of my favorite movies.
A big 5

Going to sit down again tonight. I saw this movie when I was a teenager and had fond memories of it, so I watched it again in high hopes today.
Well, how can an opinion change. After 30 years my high score has dropped to 2.5*, I really can't make it anymore.
The reason: apart from those few beautiful songs, I found the music selected during the film excruciatingly irritating, everyone who appeared on stage had already gone crazy or had it, the tension was built up to something that just didn't come out, I thought ' m mega long winded and didn't find the characters interesting but more annoying.
So I could hardly keep my attention.
When the movie ended I really looked again at the scores on both MM and IMDb and still can't believe how this movie scores so highly, I've seen better Vietnam movies. And don't get me wrong, a war film really doesn't have to be full of murder and manslaughter for me, a deeper meaning behind the film is allowed, but with this film it didn't come to me. Normally I am often no further than a point away from the IMDb scores, IMDb is usually my measure of whether I am going to watch a movie or not. Unfortunately, I am miles away from this film.
Now I realize that among all the rave reviews here on MM I'm a strange duck in the bite but hey, that's the beautiful world of opinions, but I still find it strange that I am completely out of the loop with this film... will cling to me.
On to the next movie...
