A film that is hugely loved but on the other hand also terribly hated. I'm right in the middle and can respect both opinions.

I also think the patriotic content of the film is way too high. American flags, backed by violins and other strings, are constantly fluttering in front of your eyes for no purpose.

The almost constant presence of the soundtrack bothered me quite a bit. Also, some statements by actors are a bit too much of a good thing, so that, for example, a death scene becomes a ridiculous display.

On the other hand, the film is realistic in terms of warfare. The film is based on a true story and in the making of the people who really experienced it have their say.

According to them, the film is a realistic representation of what they experienced.

Personally, I found the scenes on the battlefield to be the strongest part of the film.

What also makes a difference is the presence of Mel Gibson. He plays an excellent role as Colonel Harold Moore. He carries the film completely in my opinion and ensures that I get a good enough score!

Very realistic at times! Not for the faint of heart because of some very gory and 'burnt' scenes.

I myself had a great time with this film on my own this time.

Spent over 2 hours with Mel Gibson thinking about the best strategies under 'heavy fire' and 'face to face' with snipers.

The film does make you think again about the insanity of warfare in which boys under 20 are sent to hell because 'old men' want to fight a fight among themselves.

Just a comment on the discussion about the propaganda of war films: At the beginning of this film it is said that the film is dedicated to all the brave fighters of the

North Vietnamese army who sacrificed their lives in the war.

“Gentlemen, prepare to defend yourselves!”

Excellent war movie. At a certain point there is a lot of war violence and you would prefer to catch your breath. But on the other hand, that is also a compliment to the makers. We Were Soldiers is a war film that once again highlights the American side, but fortunately the film is not full of patriotism. Gibson's character is (obviously) religious, but I always think that fits in a war movie. Mel Gibson really gives it his all, and Barry Pepper makes every movie better just by his presence. It's also a good choice to show the side of the North Vietnamese army, and those scenes are short but sweet.
