Well, at the beginning I did wonder whether such an extreme psychedelic style is necessary to make a narrative film about psychedelics, but in hindsight, it actually worked for me. Anyone starting this with the idea that every alienating scene, every dream sequence, and every visual flash in the film must be explainable might be in for a rude awakening, because the visual language seems to be driven by the protagonist's hallucinatory experiences during his trips and by memories of his carefree youth in the titular village; however, there is enough logic in the scenes with other characters in between to keep the plot somewhat followable. Or did it help that I had already read a short summary of the (fairly elementary) story beforehand? In any case, I watched for 85 minutes reasonably captivated without looking at my watch too much, but a second viewing is out of the question; perhaps I would think differently about that if I had had experience with LSD and other "mind-altering" substances, but I don't.

Years ago I saw the only other feature film by this director, but in my memory Siddhartha (1972) was a much more conventional and realistic film, whereas you could describe Chappaqua as a realistic experience seen (or depicted) through a surrealist lens.
