My first Russian film from the previous century, but I hope it is not very representative of Russian cinema of that time. I found the whole thing somewhat strange. There is little dialogue in the film, so you have to get a lot from the visuals, but not all scenes were equally clear to me. And then especially the background sounds sometimes came across as very random. However, the main lines in the film are very clear so that it cannot really become unclear.

The film contains a number of strong (horror) scenes that make the film worth watching, no jump scares but certainly some filthy 'stuff'. In addition, lead actress Louise Salter is not annoying to look at, too bad she did not make a career in the film world.

All in all, it is certainly worth a pass, if only because of the amazement that this unknown work has left behind.

I agree with joolstein. Dark Waters is a film that has a great atmosphere. On a remote island there is a monastery, where the local nuns do not behave like usual nuns, but where all kinds of strange rites are performed. The whole story is not clear to me, but the Lovecraftian is bursting from it, with ancient monsters that are worshipped and a dark but also dreamy atmosphere. Not the most accessible film, it is a bit slow and because of the many flashbacks and dream-like sequences it is not always easy to follow in terms of plot. Visually it is quite beautiful, I did not know Baino yet but will certainly keep my eyes open for more work from the best man. And this is certainly a film that I will rewatch in due time, it is a picture with an atmosphere that suits me very well.
