La Noche del Terror Ciego plot

"Who are these unholy savages who hunt out their victims by sound alone?"

In the thirteenth century, Spanish Templars torture and murder a large group of innocent civilians, after which a popular uprising takes place. The enraged people hang the Templars, after which ravens pick their eyes out. Since then, there has been a legend that the Blind Templars crawl out of their graves at night, wander about and look for new victims only by hearing...

Pretty good for such an old movie. But it's not all strong. Nice to watch as a snack. Don't expect bloody scenes and gore. I now understand what Efteling based their haunted house on. They must have watched this movie. The nuns, the graves and coffins that open with corpses inside, the moving crosses, the smoke that hangs there. Even the nun's song is also in the haunted house of Efteling and in this film. Funny.

A young woman meets an old friend from school during a train ride. However, she cannot see that her male companion immediately has a crush on her and jumps off the train. She arrives at an abandoned medieval village. In the past, this village was ruled by excommunicated Templars with occult inclinations. In the hope of eternal life, she sacrificed virgins to the devil. In the end, they were all brought to justice and the ravens pecked out their eyes. Now they roam the ruins every night, killing the blind.

Director Amando de Ossorio combined the legends he had heard as a child with the filmmaking techniques he had seen in George A. Romero's Night of the Living Dead. The film marked a revival for Spanish Horror and many sequels followed, many of them unofficial.

Tombs of the Blind Dead is a fairly atmospheric Spanish Horror film. I thought the concept was pretty strong, but it was pretty cheaply executed. Some scenes were almost comical in their naivety. Skeletons that can slide their tombstones away, can't see, but can hear. The film contains some nice gore and also some nudity. It's just a bit too long-winded to be very entertaining.

Powerful and atmospheric scenes in the ruins. The templar zombies move in a dream-like atmosphere, including the use of slow motion and the Gregorian chants on the soundtrack. Successful creepy atmosphere, tons of creepy atmosphere actually and occasional gore. The Night of the Living Dead is not that far away. The scene in the model dollhouse, on the other hand, seems inspired by Mario Bava with those pulsating lights and the creepy warehouse. Great direction and photography in general. Acting performances are what they should be for this kind of movie. It's not all perfect, but the whole is definitely more than the sum of its parts.
