This one, just like Hammer's Countess Dracula, is based on the fictional retelling of the story of Elisabeth Báthory. This Hungarian countess appears to have actually existed and is known as one of the greatest female serial killers of all time.
This film and the previously mentioned one, however, delve into the folklore that has grown up around her: namely, the story that she would drink the blood of virgins and bathe in it to stay young herself.
I didn't find the Hammer retelling of this story particularly strong to begin with, but this one is even worse.
Grau certainly tries to create a gothic atmosphere, but unfortunately, mainly due to the poor acting, the atmosphere fails to come across. This is also partly due to the script and the storyline, as so little happens, especially in the first half of the film, that as a viewer you already struggle to keep watching. "Fortunately," I have managed to work my way through quite a bit of schlock over the years, and that helped me finish watching this film once again.
It still results in a reasonably satisfying view of the aged Countess and a scene in which someone is removed.
Personally, I find Grau's Night of the Living Dead rip-off The Living Dead at Manchester Morgue much better.
