A young woman is stalked by a man who observes her doings from an apartment complex across her street. After several reports to the police, it appears that they do not take her seriously at all. Out of sheer desperation, she decides to look for the culprit herself.

A good film in which a woman moves into an apartment but is being watched by someone. Although the film has a somewhat monotonous premise, it actually turns out to be quite bearable. This voyeuristic-stalker thriller is clearly influenced by Hitchcock (if only because of the opening credits). There are still a few suspenseful moments, and that just barely earns it 3.5 stars.

Carpenter does a Hitchcock...
This simply structured film, in which a single woman becomes the target of a voyeuristic stalker, has a few strong moments (under the manhole cover 
) and can be considered quite suspenseful. After all, you know ultimately that it will sooner or later lead to an attempted murder . Carpenter manages to create a menacing nocturnal atmosphere here with anonymous residential towers where every window could be a watchful eye. The fact that you can feel alone and be alone while in a city surrounded by thousands of people is a thought that Carpenter utilizes well.
You can tell it was made on a tight budget, but even so, the result with these minimal resources is certainly OK. There are a few strange and somewhat annoying plot errors here and there: obviously you can unplug the phone, but the idea of drawing curtains over the windows also comes late, and on the first date Paul and Leigh don't exchange phone numbers, they break up, but five minutes later he's sitting comfortably in her apartment anyway. Filmkriebel says: Carpenter's second least-watched film is actually a very strong one.

An annoying lead and a ridiculous plot, but director John Carpenter has made significant progress compared to his debut. The precise, dynamic camerawork is particularly striking, creating a fine atmosphere on several occasions combined with well-chosen lighting. With this, Carpenter single-handedly elevates a relatively simple premise, although it takes a while for the tension to really start to build. It finally comes to the fore towards the end, but by then the viewer is already put to the test with the not-very-strong middle section. Moreover, Lauren Hutton evokes little satisfaction or sympathy, meaning you are rarely drawn to the screen.
