Half off.

The first time I saw this I thought the film was really heavy. It still works, but a little less overwhelming. That being said, this remains a very fun and fascinating Tsukamoto.

He focuses a little more on the dramatic side here, although his typical style is fully retained. Beautiful black and white work accompanied by a great soundtrack. In terms of stylized impact, this film has lost none of its glory.

But due to the slightly greater focus on the story, I was still bothered by the poor acting. Tsukamoto himself is still doing well, he knows what his films need, but Kirina Mano feels visibly uncomfortable in front of the camera, which starts to become quite unpleasant after a while.

It's fortunate that Tsukamoto skillfully masks it all with his great style, but in the final bill it still costs the film half a point.

4.0* and a extensive review

Saw this shortly after Tokyo Fist, and oh how good it is.

As I said with Tokyo Fist: It has been years since I last looked into Tsukamoto... and Tokyo Fist was immediately a great buy that mainly relied on the beautiful visual aspects and the Urban Atmosphere. The Urban atmosphere returns in Bullet Ballet, together with the typical crazy montages as I remembered from Tsukamoto. Only now it is in black and white.

A man (Tsukamoto again gives himself the leading role) becomes obsessed with his wife's suicide; who shot himself in the head. After this traumatic event, the man is concerned with nothing other than reconstructing and trying to understand how this could have happened. When he makes connections with the underworld to find a similar gun with which his wife killed herself, he has to deal with an outrageous hooker and a group of punks who soon have his best interests at heart.

The film alternates from the man to these crazy punks who roam the slums of Tokyo and thus have rivals. The man builds up a kind of bond with the whore, which sometimes makes for some rather moving scenes.

The unforgettable moments were those parts where the shots of that gun are alternated with old war images, and of course that really crazy gang fight (is there someone standing there making a phone call while he attacks his opponents with his other hand?).[ /spoiler] And again, the black and white creates a perfect raw atmosphere here, in combination with the grimy outskirts of Tokyo.

The crazy heavy metal soundtrack also worked well with the scenes.

Yes, this was another video for me. Glad I got to delve into the man again this month.

4.5*

Perhaps not always a coherent story, because I had to pay attention to keep up with it. Not that it becomes unnecessarily complex, but it is vague. Visually a lot stronger with those fine black and white structures and a pace that is both calm and accelerated during the violence.

Not blown away by this film, but the appreciation is there. The acting is sometimes quite hysterical and overdone (literally), not always unusual in Asian films, but here it was still noticeable.
