Francis Veber is a master in writing and making films with crazy developments, which are often based on sharply written, hilarious dialogues. This farce confirms that once again. The story gets off to a somewhat hesitant start, but from the moment Jacques Villeret – in a role that is tailor-made for him – arrives at his host's house, there is laughter, screeching, roaring. Just like in other films by Veber, the jokes and abrupt twists come at a rapid pace.

Too bad, but unfortunately... apparently someone has seen fit to make a remake for the American audience. What a disaster...!

I didn't expect much from it and perhaps that's why I was positively surprised. The film feels like a stage farce where you can see Piet Bambergen and Rudi Falkenhagen playing the roles. The crazy and unbelievable situations just keep coming one after the other. You have to be able to handle it, because it is a bit bland.
Fortunately, it doesn't really go off track anywhere, the characters are nicely balanced and the humor is regular enough to bring a generous smile. The downside is that a serious scene still needs to be added at the end. And perhaps also that we never arrive at the titled dinner Entertaining snack.

French comedy classic that even surpassed Titanic at the box office in France. It can be seen that it is a stage play film adaptation that actually relies on its sharp dialogues. Le Diner de Cons is a duel of words between Pierre, who regularly brings a random idiot to a dinner with friends to laugh at him all evening. In Pignon he has acquired a top example to the extent that he himself becomes involved in all kinds of problems related to his wife leaving him. It was fun, I didn't find it hilarious anywhere, but the part with the tax inspector was wonderful. Most will be more familiar with the American remake "Dinner for Schmucks".
