A great film, which was clearly shot with a lot of fun. In my opinion, the protagonists must have been struggling with each other every now and then. Good story, in which Caine (brilliant with that straight face of his) and the crazy Martin make for an amusing succession of outsmarting each other... until... Anyway, you see that again as a scenario of all sides are right, the effect is very strong. Recommended. Almost never on TV. So I bought it as a DVD and watched it with a friend tonight.

Quite a nice movie for an afternoon or evening movie. Steve Martin & Michael Caine steal the show, but Glenne Headly also deserves a shout out. Not to be inferior to actors of this level is an art in itself.
The story is liked and for most of the time also interesting to follow and has a nice summer atmosphere, the ending has a nice twist but goes on a bit too long after that.
That's actually the only downside I can mention, the running time of the film could have been a little shorter to improve the momentum.

3.5*

Nice movie with a prominent cast. Steve Martin and Michael Caine in a timeless narrative concept about two crooks who steal money from rich women in a sunny southern France.

Two huge egos that always outdo each other in a mutual competition. That fight produces humorous situations, because the two are very different in their approach. Caine takes his craft seriously and has rehearsed and perfected his scamming practices down to the last detail. He has assumed a distinguished personality. He pretends to be a prince, wears tailored suits and lives in a luxurious villa. Martin, on the other hand, uses a much looser style. He is a smooth talker, who looks popular. He has no general routine, but improvises freely and lives from day to day. The interactions are fun. The competition is fun. The characters are fun.

The humor lives on the competitive behavior of the two gentlemen. It's very funny to watch Caine and Martin fight each other, outdo each other and make fun of each other. For that they take on idiotic characters and show idiotic masquerades. The film lives much more on visual humor than on verbal humor.

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is a fun light-hearted comedy in a cheerful Mediterranean setting with two strong comedic leads for Caine and Martin. A film full of nice simple humor that is just funny.
