Striking Distance plot

"They shouldn't have put him in the water, if they didn't want him to make waves."

Tom Hardy is a police officer with the 'Water Rescue Squad'. In a river he finds a few corpses, which remind him of his tragic past. The mysterious circumstances cause Tom to rekindle his anger at the death of his father. Two years ago, Tom lost his police badge because he claimed that his father, Police Chief Hardy, was murdered by a police officer. No one believed this and the entire police department regarded him as a deserter. Tom's new colleague, Jo Christman, believes his story is based on more than just fantasy. Together they start an illegal investigation into the new murders.

Sire, il n'y a plus de flics. This '90s gem can be called the last of the cop movies, that is to say, a hard-boiled cop: a dirty cunt, cynical to the bone, drunk, bordering on psychosis, always willing to hammering suspects on their faces and looking for love in all the wrong places. Willis plays the ultimate unlucky person, in fifteen minutes of playing time his father and ex-wife are murdered and his partner commits suicide. Striking Distance therefore seems to be a conscious hyperbole of genre conventions, a cinematic universe where everyone is a cop. Action scenes or subplots are rare, the film is mainly one long succession of raging temper frogs who should better think about their blood pressure, "you're off the case!" "you're outta your jurisdiction!". Very nicely interspersed with images of Pittsburgh and atypically brutal in terms of violence - the comparison with italo crime by Insignificance above is not that crazy.

A film from more than 25 years ago that, despite the typical 80's/90's setting, still holds up well.

Good story with a lot of tension, smoothly running, enough action and a very surprising ending.
Good role by Bruce Willis and always nice to see Tom Sizemore and Dennis Farina (for me always Albert Lombard) in a movie even though you know in advance that Farina is a bad guy.

Especially the 90s had a lot of action thrillers and in my memory always good.
Too bad there's a shortage of this genre now.

Just good!

Willis as you prefer to see him. A lived-in cop, unkempt, drinking, chain-smoking, scolding and fighting.

Other than that, there isn't really much to do. A large cast with familiar faces and varying performances. At times it is quite cringe and over the top (especially the portrayal of the bad guy in the final scene, but also the countless random fights between the cops). In terms of action, it is also not very spectacular. But it's somehow entertaining nonetheless.

Because of the youth sentiment still 3.5 stars. Fun for fans of The Last Boy Scout and Die Hard.
