Solid old school thriller about a bodyguard. Perhaps less flashy than The Bodyguard (1992) with Costner, but slightly better. Today we certainly don't see Eastwood doing it anymore, but even 27 years ago Eastwood bumped into its limits in its active role. Of course also because this was stipulated in such a way for his character that was approaching the best-before date.

Great role also by Malkovich who played a cat-and-mouse game with Eastwood as a psychopath. Found the film quite exciting, such as the rooftop chase. Although the ending is of course predictable because there is too much reference to it in the course of the film.

The romance with Russo does not come to fruition, although the stitches are usually successful. Eastwood shouldn't teach you to make one-liners. Entertaining thriller, not memorable, but always nice to see.

In the Line of Fire is a fine dark thriller in which Clint Eastwood once again plays the dogged and complacent action hero. The script is pretty straight forward. The tight direction is by Wolfgang Petersen. Ennio Morricone's understated score.

Petersen gives Eastwood ample opportunity to let off steam physically. Eastwood, then 63, runs and climbs like a young dog, throwing the occasional hard fist as in his best days. The script not only provides the physical side but also gives it a softer side. When Eastwood is not serving as the hardened and cold-blooded security guard of the US President, he delicately plays a piece of easy listening on the piano. And if that wasn't enough, he is even allowed to show emotion in one scene. Nice role.

The other beautiful role is for John Malkovich. He plays an insane psychopath. He plays it frighteningly controlled, controlled and driven. Diabolical. He's scary and cold-blooded in a way that only Malkovich can be. Eastwood finds in him a worthy opponent.

In the film, Eastwood is allowed to show his fear and have feelings. He may be human. That is a strong point in the midst of the tense and more obligatory thriller aspects in the film. The vulnerable psychological part of his character description has a positive effect on the story. The credibility of his character supports the credibility of the story and increases the tension. In addition, the duel between Eastwood and Malkovich, which is mainly psychologically based, takes on an even more disturbing touch.

In the Line of Fire is an intelligent thriller. The tension is fine. A little heartache, guilt and other drama are not lacking. Beautifully filmed. Dynamic and atmospheric camera work. Good story too. Good acting and well developed main characters.

Excellent film about an aging secret agent who returns to work in the president's security. Simply an entertaining thriller with some good dialogues. Enough exciting scenes and the tension-increasing music by Ennio Morricone also helps with this. A wonderful role by the then also old hand Clint Eastwood, but it is John Malkovich who knows how to steal the scenes.
