Nice atmospheric Holmes, with mist, storm, rain, windows blowing open and many gruesomely mutilated victims. The "monotonous" setting didn't bother me (wonderfully Gothic) and I didn't see the punch line coming (I thought of one perpetrator, so more And then there were none than Murder on the Orient Express so to speak). And Aubrey Mather is a fine Alastair, a kind of Mr Dick as the production notes on my DVD mention (certainly as played by Lennox Pawle in George Cukor's wonderful 1935 film adaptation, in which the title character's cruel stepfather Mr Murdstone was played by... Basil Rathbone).

Watson and Inspector Lassard are portrayed as a bit of a caricature and silly. The simple, always smiling Alastair, one of the seven Comrades, is also portrayed as an exaggerated caricature. Basil Rathbone is however extremely suitable for the role of Sherlock Holmes! Incidentally, I noticed that he surprisingly often says "Hello" when he has discovered something. An expression that you often hear in English-language films these days.

The House of Fear is a fun film in this series, but certainly not the best.

Only one location this time, but what a location: the mansion creaks and groans on all sides and fortunately the weather is always bad in Scotland. The gentlemen of the society die one after the other, and I personally expected a climax like 10 Little Niggers, but it's all a bit different. Negative points are again the previously mentioned silly roles for Lestrade and Watson, a problem that is somewhat annoying in almost every Rathbone-Holmes, a regrettable decision. Otherwise a not bad part in the series, but certainly not the best.
