Brutus Jones (Robeson) is a railroad clerk who leaves his girlfriend Dolly in favor of Undine. Shortly afterwards, however, she leaves him. When he kills his friend Jeff, he flees to Haiti. There he starts a company with Smithers (Wilson) and becomes very rich. He plays games with the residents and makes them believe that only a silver bullet can kill him. The inhabitants believe that he is immortal and he proclaims himself emperor after which he rules with a heavy hand over the inhabitants. When the inhabitants revolt, he is forced to flee into the jungle.
