"Freckle" Marléne Jobert was a welcome appearance on the silver screen at the time and did put on several great acts ("Nous ne vieillirons pas ensemble" to name just one), but unfortunately she is in this "Le Passager de la Pluie" saddled with a rather implausible role.

The film does have a thriller allure but comes across as rather confused with some lame scenes (the nuts !?).

There was more to it.

In self-defense, Mellie [Marlène Jobert] kills an intruder [Marc Mazza] who tries to rape her. She tries to keep her act of desperation a secret by dumping the body in a river, but when an American Colonel Harry Dobbs [Charles Bronson] comes to investigate the murder, he immediately realizes the problem. However, Dobbs proves more interested in the contents of the red bag the intruder was carrying and plays a vicious psychological game in hopes that Mellie will tell him where the bag has gone. But Mellie knows nothing!

The film opens strongly and Bronson plays one of his best roles, but Jobert struggles with the English (note the intonation) and is therefore less convincing. The psychological jousting between Bronson and Jobert provides some strong moments and Bronson holds his own in a well-filmed fight scene, but René Clément's attempts to weave humor into the story are clumsy and break the tension. The flashy reference to the work of Alfred Hitchcock is therefore not entirely appropriate.

Somewhat surprised by this movie. A slightly different Bronson than I'm used to. Without any prior knowledge of the plot, some scenes came across as quite long-winded, but the fine (French) atmosphere throughout the film made up for that. The story remained captivating with a single tense moment. Bronson and Jobert played fine roles. And don't forget the role for Jill Ireland (as Nicole), Bronson's wife at the time.
