The Four Feathers plot

"They made him a hero by branding him a coward . . . the story of a man who conquered fear."

When a British officer resigns from the army on the eve of a major battle against the Egyptian rebels, he is given four feathers by the other members of his unit as a sign of cowardice. In the battle, however, his unit is captured, after which he decides to disguise himself as an Egyptian and free his unit, to prove that he is not a coward.

Mainly because of the lead actor, I was quite apprehensive beforehand about this umpteenth film adaptation of AEW Mason's novel (I believe this is the fifth version), but although Beau Bridges, at 36, is actually quite a bit too old for the role of Harry Faversham here, fortunately he does not yet have the somewhat sagging, old-man-dog face of later years, and with that beard he is unrecognizable anyway, so although American, he is actually a fine choice. The rest of the cast does a good job as well; I never really have anything to complain about regarding Robert Powell (it is also nice how his Jack doesn't lie about his meeting with Harry: "I never saw him."), and although I don't care much for Jane Seymour, I must say that this role fits her like a glove. The action scenes are reasonably well filmed, sometimes a bit chaotic (which suits the battle well but less so the one-on-one fights in the Arabian coffee house), and the uniforms, costumes, and the beautiful dark rooms and corridors in General Faversham's house all look magnificent. All in all, a solid adaptation, perhaps not entirely worth seeing in cinemas instead of on television, but nothing to be ashamed of either.
