Lost Souls offers no innovation within the genre. Still, it's a pleasant movie. Director Janusz Kaminski spends time with his characters and lets the story develop slowly. The film is not crammed with superficial spectacle scenes. No grimacing devil figures, no offensive (in the sense of unnecessary) sex scenes, no hellfire.

Instead, focus on the story and characters. And attention to creating a dark atmosphere. The world that Jaminski paints is dark. Brown and black tones dominate and contrast sharply with dazzling rays of light that occasionally also determine the image. Splashes of hope that prevent the film from offering only dull gloom. I liked that.

Two appealing protagonists. Winona Ryder and Ben Chaplin. Ryder as a driven victim who uncovers a diabolical plot. Chaplin as the character who is the cue in that. The key question is the same as in The Omen. Can Ryder prevent the incarnation of the devil? The film deviates slightly from the pattern of The Omen by also raising the question of whether Ryder has them all in a row. That question sows some doubt in the viewer and helps build the tension. As mentioned, Lost Souls offers nothing that is innovative.

Anyway, the film does it under an atmospheric layer of sinister threat, has tense moments and has an appropriate showdown that does not compromise on the sober tone.

Great movie.
