"Crime may not pay...but sex does".

Great pre-Code film and a fine, convincing Jean Harlow (21) as Lilian.
Trying on a dress in a store, Lilian positions herself in front of a sunny window: "Can you see through this?"
Off-camera store clerk: "I'm afraid you can, Miss."
Lillian: "I'll wear it."

Sidekick Una Merkel is just as cool again as in The Maltese Falcon (1931).
I'm not much of a comedy fan, but this film is well worth watching. It's included in THIS 2-DVD box set.

4.0*(IMDB 8/10*)

A pre-Hays Code film built entirely around Jean Harlow, who unashamedly uses her sexy looks to climb the social ladder. Without a doubt, Harlow is a beautiful woman, but personally, I find her co-stars Leila Hyams and Una Merkel considerably more attractive. Casting a stiff as Chester Morris in the male lead does the film no favors.

In terms of storyline, this film is somewhat comparable to Barbara Stanwyck's Baby Face (1933), which in my opinion is better, simply because Stanwyck is a much better actress.

Few things were as controversial after the Code as women using men to advance in pre-Code films. But back then, it was still possible. The sexually provocative scenes had to be toned down a notch. But after that, it was allowed. Harlow is pushing the boundaries as always, and the film is particularly compelling because she isn't condemned, but simply wins.

Interesting fact: Although uncredited, the first draft of the script was written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, best known for his classic novel The Great Gatsby, which has been adapted into a film multiple times.
