Powerful film that, with a fairly simple black-and-white story, once again highlights the racial issue in America.

It is indeed not very subtle, but it all works and that is the most important thing. The strength here lies mainly in the acting and the interplay of the two main actors. Tony Curtis and Sidney Poitier play with conviction, make their characters real people and are credible at all times.

In addition, the film is quite exciting at times and I simply thought the ending was very good. Simplicity can sometimes be a strong force and The Defiant Ones is proof of that.

"You can't lynch me, I'm white".

The film is one big sketch of the contempt for the black race - culminating in the film's attitude towards women - in the States in the 1950s.

Yet it is both white and black who hope for a better existence.

Several very well-delivered scenes that strongly underline the theme of the film.

"The Defiant Ones" is a good film by Stanley Kramer, in black and white, how could it be otherwise.

Tony Curtis, a great actor at the time, never won an Oscar but was nominated for one with this film.

That was a good idea, to chain a white and a black together for an anti-racist film. In practice perhaps unthinkable, but it is the lesson of tolerance that counts here. I do wonder what this film did to the Americans and how they looked at this situation... Curtis and Poitier give strong performances; on the one hand they attack each other and on the other hand they learn to respect each other. I find the remake from 1996 ("Fled") pales in comparison now that I have seen the original.
