Sautet rarely if ever disappoints, not even in this "Mado", film, which, through the intrigue of business rivalry, corruption, revenge and retaliation, must be seen above all as a psychological fight of the main character with his own feelings and competence against the people surrounding him.

Towards the end, scenes develop that apparently have nothing to do with the intrigue, but rather serve as symbolism for slipping further and getting stuck in the mud.

Definitely fascinating for those who can accurately assess the relationships in the story.

Piccoli is excellent, as always, Romy Schneider has only a small role, Jacques Dutronc is stubborn as usual, but the credit for the acting goes without a doubt to Charles Denner in my opinion.

Intelligent and skillfully made film. I did have some trouble with the pace: especially in the first half there is intensive talking and you have to pay attention, but at the end the whole suddenly (almost literally) drops away.

Lately I happened to see some more French 70s films and then you get to know some of the actors from that time better. Charles Denner is one of those and he has a nice supporting role here. Also applies to Jean Bouise, who unfortunately plays a small role, just like Romy Schneider.

By the way, Dutronc's role is very meaningless; I especially enjoyed seeing and recognizing its head.
