Not nearly at the level of "Remains of the Day", but still a neat film about the rich bourgeoisie of a few centuries ago, of which the British have the patent to cast such intrigues of romance, jealousy, class distinctions, etc. into an acceptable film. A solid script and, given the cast, the acting could not be left out.

The film tells about the Schlegel sisters. Helen is rejected by the youngest son of the Wilcox family, but Margaret remains friends with Mrs. Wilcox. Some time after Mrs. Wilcox's death, Mr. Wilcox proposes to Margaret. Helen wants Mr. Wilcox to help the poor couple Bast and causes quite a commotion in the family...

Emma Thompson put down a nice Margaret, her positivity reminded me a bit of my mother. Also Anthony Hopkins (in a completely different role as Hannibal Lecter) and a young Helena Bonham Carter for the Tim Burton films.

Despite it being such a long film, the pace felt a bit too rushed at times. Certain things seem to happen so suddenly, for example Mr. Wilcox who with Ms. Schlegel wants to get married. The Howards End house was like a MacGuffin. The story hardly takes place there and we don't even get to see the entire interior, but it still plays a decisive role in the story.

The film was again beautifully shot. Lovely British setting with upper-class scenes reminiscent of early Hitchcock's such as Rebecca. Also very nice music by Richard Robbins.

While Howards End definitely wins in terms of atmosphere, The Remains of the Day was a bit stronger in content. Moreover, Hopkins and Thompson also came into their own in this. Howards End feels more like a superbly shot soap opera. Nevertheless, a wonderful escape from the present with this beautiful costume drama from James Ivory.

Wonderful lightly rippling film that shows England at its best. By that I mean the decor, of course, not the class contradictions of the time, which were far from beautiful. Magnificent English gardens that seem almost haggard but at the same time perfect. What a huge difference with those neat little bourgeois gardens here in the Netherlands. The music is fantastic, from very sweet to heavily bombastic. Little things in the movie that I really liked, like that row of Dickens books being put on the shelf or the housekeeper from Howards End unsheathing that sword. Everyone acts excellently. It's just a pity that Vanessa Redgrave, as chieftain of the Wilcox family, can't be seen the entire film and soon dies, because I found her character intriguing. At one point they all sit around the table, says Redgrave: 'I've always felt that if we could bring the mothers from all countries together, there would be no more war.' That sounds very nice and people nod in agreement. But a moment later, about the women's movement, she says that discussions should be left to men and that she is delighted that she does not have to vote. Oh, and Hopkins, also so good. He looks a bit like Fritz Haarmann here, I think, the German serial killer.

'Oh look, that's awfully jolly. Especially that foxglove.'

"It's digitalis."

'Digital? Sounds like a sneeze...'
