Tremors 5: Bloodlines plot

25 years after his first confrontation with the Graboids, giant man-eating worms, Burt Gummer once again takes on the Graboids and the Ass Blasters, an evolved version of the Graboid and even more deadly. He moves to South Africa with technical genius Travis Welker to host a survival TV show. But the situation is more dangerous than he bargained for.

Ugh.

Somehow I missed part 4, I'll watch it again sometime to complete the list. I thought the first one was very good, the two subsequent films much less so. I had moderate expectations for this part, but even those were still too high.

Tremors 5 is presented very tongue-in-cheek, everything is presented with a smile, and apart from the monsters there is relatively little gore. Unfortunately, the humor is more annoying than fun, making it a very annoying film to sit through.

Gummer has become an annoying guy, but is the only one who can carry the film a bit. The rest is even worse. The whole thing with the worms will be expanded upon a bit further, but I wonder if anyone is waiting for that.

It may sound strange, but instead of this somewhat ironic sequel, I would have preferred to see a reboot. Tremors are the worms for me, the rest is bullshit. This was ironic bullshit, unacceptable.

0.5*

Eleven years after the last film, a new Tremors is released, from the director who apparently made a career in unnecessary sequels to franchises such as Jarhead 2, Lake Placid 4 and Kindergartencop 2. Now Tremors is not a high-quality franchise, in fact the first one is especially a great horror comedy . The sequels were fewer, but were all still quite entertaining. No matter how absurd and cheesy they became.

Tremors 5 is a lot less 'fun cheesy' and in many ways just plain bad. The film is fortunate that Michael Gross is back as Burt Gummer, who can still carry the film quite well. Unfortunately, far too much attention is paid to all those terribly flat and uninteresting side characters. You get vicarious shame when you see how a 45-year-old Jamie Kennedy tries to act like a teenager. Jamie Kennedy is to Tremors what Shia Labeouf was to the Indiana Jones franchise. Furthermore, they borrow a lot from the Jurassic Park franchise, there are countless references, homages and copies. Tremors 5: Bloodlines is mainly very 'meh', with little spectacular gore, no tension and childish attempts at humor. However, I expected the special effects to be worse and fortunately Burt Gummer was there.

As far as I'm concerned, part 6 will just be an entire movie of Burt Gummer vs. giant underground worms, nothing more. And certainly not Jamie Kennedy.

All right, 2.5 stars. Especially for Burt.

The previous four parts were shot in California, but director Don Michael Paul brings this fifth part to South Africa for a change. Michael Gross also returns here and this time he is in the company of Jamie Kennedy. Together they make a nice duo, but eventually they get quite boring. Mainly because this film relies heavily on humor and less on action scenes, but that will eat away at the viewer in the long run. Tremors 5 also features a return to computer effects. They look a bit better compared to the previous parts, but they lack the filth that should provide the necessary fun. Fortunately, the finale is spectacular and the characters remain entertaining, but that doesn't stop the event from regularly turning out to be boring. It is extra unfortunate that the protagonists only have to deal with two enemies.
