Keetje Tippel plot
The large family of which the girl Keetje Tippel is a part, moves from the Frisian countryside to Amsterdam in the hope that they will get better there. But soon poverty takes over in the basement room that is their home. Keetje initially gets work in a laundry, then in a millinery, where the boss rapes her and finally -under her mother's wings- in prostitution, as the successor to the livelihood of her sister, who has been kicked out of this business. Anecdotal film adaptation of the diaries of the 19th-century prostitute Neel Doff.

Also a typical Dutch Verhoeven film, but a bit better than Turks Fruit (a comparison is obvious since the director + lead actors are the same). I do understand the popularity of the latter film over this one. It still radiates the free spirit of those years, which at the time would have appealed more than the historical setting of this film. I find that setting a bit more interesting, although the elaboration is still quite superficial.
Based on the autobiography of a writer who at the time was even seen as a contender for the Nobel Prize for literature, this feels more like typical Verhoeven. So a lot of emphasis on sex, which together with food seems to be the main motivation of everyone's actions in this film. Only the main character seems to withdraw from this, but towards the end it turns out that he is also not devoid of opportunism to get things better. Not too deep, at least in the figurative sense.
The images look a bit dusty, just like in Turkish Delight, except for a nice boat scene at the beginning; the music stands out a bit more. The main theme of Van Otterloo is very beautiful, and Offenbach also fits the park scene in question. This is especially the little extra compared to Turkish Delight. Partly because of that half extra compared to that film. 2*.

Pleasant film adaptation of Neel Doff's autobiographical novels about her childhood and her experiences in prostitution. Jan de Bont's fine camera work gives the film an authentic appearance. In addition, the story, mainly due to the fact that it is based on real experiences, is fascinating enough to overlook the generally rather mediocre acting. The film is not one of Paul Verhoeven's best work, but it is certainly not bad.
