Teenager Beverly grows up in a humble family. She shows a great interest in literature from an early age and wants to become a writer and study in New York. However, as a 15-year-old girl, Beverly also develops a healthy interest in boys. She falls head over heels in love with a boy from school. When she tries to get his attention at a party, she makes fun of herself. The somewhat dull but sweet Ray jumps in the gap for her and that is the beginning of a passionate relationship. However, that has far-reaching consequences when Beverly discovers that she is pregnant. As a young teenage mother, she is determined to finish school after all.
