Mixtures of persons, misunderstandings and the familiar hassle of the Funès are the ingredients of this French comedy that relies too much on burlesque throws, falls and fights to be really funny. The fact would have allowed a somewhat finer humour, but that is rarely synonymous with this French comedian.

I usually rate films with the Funès quite highly. Consider him one of the best comedians ever. But I admit.. Les Grandes Vacances is not at the top. A school principal wants to brush up on his son Philippe's English during the summer holidays, while a wealthy Scot's daughter comes to France for the same reason. But the youngsters have other holiday plans and, much to the indignation of their families, they also fall in love. De Funès does not really surprise with his authoritarian energetic character. He does what he has to do. The best scenes come when De Funès does everything he can to stop the pleasure boat his son is on. Laughing again when he shows up in a sailor suit that is much too big. The joke density was just too low to speak of a topper. Small 3.5*

Clear your mind and enjoy. Swapping of characters is a tried and true thing for comedies and it works fine here too. It just goes on without any dead moments. I certainly liked the humor and Louis de Funès has never disappointed me (which is an understatement). The ending of the movie is pretty crazy, but then it's a pretty crazy movie.
