Fort Saganne plot
1911. The farmer Charles Saganne (Gérard Depardieu) enlists voluntarily in the French army and is sent to the Sahara. There he serves under the aristocratic Colonel Dubreuilh. He soon distinguishes himself and commands respect from both his fellow soldiers and the Arabs. He is sent to Paris on a diplomatic mission that fails miserably. Back in the Sahara, he leads the campaign against Sultan Omar. He gains fame and military honours, but his exploits and idealism prove less suitable for the trenches of World War I.
