Tony Musant and Martin Sheen made their film debut in this socially critical drama as two troublemakers who make life difficult for a group of passengers while sharing the same subway car. In the first part, we're introduced to the various characters, who are written as a cross-section of society, and then we see how the two troublemakers confront each passenger with their weaknesses. The premise is intriguing, and thanks in part to Gerald Hirschfeld's atmospheric, claustrophobic camerawork, director Larry Peerce maintains the tension. However, as a socially critical piece, it's not particularly noteworthy, and Musant and Sheen are quite over-the-top.

A beautiful film in which two men terrorize subway passengers. It's well-constructed, with the first half potentially being a social drama. The second half strongly explores the dynamics between the passengers (especially the passive and expectant attitude). Raw, brutal, and realistic, and the performances by the entire cast (which includes quite a few familiar names) are excellent.

It was as if I was sitting in that subway compartment myself. I repeatedly caught myself shaking with rage in my seat, fists clenched, as those two drunks intimidated, assaulted, and humiliated the other passengers to the core. I felt intense hatred for those two jerks, especially when they did this to the Black man and his wife. I kept anxiously wondering what I would do if something like that happened to me. The fact that I couldn't answer made me very scared. At one point, one of the two drunks was lying on his back on the floor, and the other jerk was quite far away. I hadn't thought a movie could trigger this in me, but at that moment, the negative thought crossed my mind: "Now I'm going to kick you in the throat with all my might, and I hope you die. You're not worth living." I found myself vigorously rocking my right leg. That was also the moment I appreciated the film's sad, somber black-and-white shooting. Color would have detracted from the entire atmosphere and intense experience. Color would likely have been an unwanted distraction from the intensity of "The Incident." I found this film to be a deeply intense and powerful event. Exceptionally well-directed and produced!
