Fortunately, there is Shirley (Good in such roles: "Can Can", "Irma La Douce"...), because I don't actually find this musical all that extraordinary. Of course, Cy Coleman's music is the strength of this film, and I especially remember the song "Big Spender".

An entertaining, feature-length film on a very well-produced Blu-ray disc from powerhousefilms.co.uk with English subtitles and plenty of extras provided a lot of viewing pleasure last night. Sammy Davis Jr. was indeed great. I went to bed in a cheerful mood afterwards. A breath of fresh air in these depressing corona times.

The film is indeed quite long and extensive. And that is the main drawback. But otherwise, it is a refreshing musical that builds upon the Hollywood tradition but adds a script that is already quite a bit darker and has a great many fun new ideas, for example in the staging and the camerawork during the songs. Fosse would later take it even further.

For success, it did not entirely contribute to the spirit of the times (musicals were out of fashion just when this film came out); this was one of the many musical flops of the late 1960s. Ultimately, however, a re-evaluation occurred due to the theatrical version and Fosse's later success.
