Lumet beautifully captures the atmosphere of early 1980s New York. Partly because of the setting and partly because of the raw characters. It's great how a nuanced picture of corrupt cops is presented, something you don't often see. The cast is strong, including Williams, where you can see the doubt and fear in his eyes. The long running time is no problem and the film never gets boring.

Outstanding film in which a narcotics officer acts as an informant against dirty cops. Based on a true story about years of operation (and perhaps a bit on the long side because of this). The story gradually gets better. Realistically and without any frills portrayed thanks to the location work. A comparison with Serpico is inevitable, but this film does not reach that level and moreover Treat Williams is no Al Pacino.

Sidney Lumet and Jay Presson Allen received an Oscar nomination for the screenplay of this long, complex, but always captivating story based on the experiences of New York detective Robert Leuci, who volunteered for a commission investigating corruption within the police force. An investigation that immortalized the direct result of fellow Frank Serpico's revelations in the late 1960s in Al Pacino's definitive breakthrough film Serpico directed by... Sidney Lumet! So Lumet returns to this theme with Treat Williams in the role of whistleblower Sonny Leuci. His decision to talk and cooperate with the committee means he will be maligned by his colleagues, but that is a price he is willing to pay. What Sonny had not counted on is that a number of investigators do not trust him because he himself has been guilty of corruption a few times. And so Sonny ends up between the wall and the ship and it becomes increasingly difficult to stay upright (literally and figuratively), despite the support of his wife [Lindsay Crouse].

You have to keep your head up from start to finish to be able to follow the plot properly, also because of the many different characters and because the dividing line between the 'good guys' and the 'bad guys' is (deliberately) not always clearly visible. Treat Williams regularly gives the film a good adrenaline rush and ensures that this relevant, poignant account is very worthwhile.
