The acting was very strong. The cops and the dealers, in particular, came across very impressively during the moments when they were high. That was portrayed very realistically. The final scene in which Jim gets shot in that caravan and Kristen starts crying very hard was also very emotional.

However, despite the strong acting of the entire cast, the film failed to fully captivate me. I felt the story meandered quite a bit at times. I also failed to grasp the motivation behind both officers taking on this work. You see them start the task and quickly become very addicted, but you don't really see the background behind why they took on this very difficult job. Because of this, something is missing from the story.

Personally, I found this to be quite a disappointing drama. That was certainly not due to Jason Patric and Jennifer Jason Leigh, who both acted well, but rather to the story and, above all, the execution.

The story might come across as realistic, but I didn't find it truly engaging anywhere; it was also quite long-winded and often a bit boring. I also found the terrible blues (I'm not a big fan of that) guitar music that was frequently present in the background to be more irritating than beautiful. Furthermore, I feel the whole story could have been more intense and gripping, and more could have happened. The ending, however, was quite nice (somewhat of a déjà vu to the beginning, but more powerful ).

All in all, nice to have seen once (seen on the MGM TV channel), but nothing more.

Slow-paced but well-executed crime film about undercover narcotics, offering a glimpse into that world. Leigh and Patrick complement each other well. It is a shame that the whole thing meanders too much with processes that, with more depth, would have elevated the film to a higher level. 3.3* The music accounts for 0.5* Peculiar: the brand of whiskey Patrick drinks at the end of the film and the illuminated sign at the dining room, the word with a hyphen in between.
