The Dreamers plot

"Together nothing is impossible. Together nothing is forbidden."

It is 1968. In Paris, students protest against the French government. In this setting, the three main characters of The Dreamers meet. Matthew (Michael Pitt) is an American studying in Paris. He is a real cinephile: he spends all his free time in the Cinemathèque. The twins Isabelle (Eva Green) and Theo (Louis Garrel) can also be found here. They meet and become friends at a student meeting. The twins' parents are on a trip, so Matthew soon swaps his hotel room for the guest room with his new friends. The three withdraw from the outside world and discuss movies and politics over expensive wine. But above all they play their favorite game: imitating movie scenes. The Dreamers is the story of self-discovery of three young college students who put each other to tests to see how far they can and will go.

Weird affair.

I saw the film a good week ago, and after much thought I still don't know what it actually wants to say.

There is a lot of posturing that is initially easy to look away, but somewhere halfway through some disgraceful scenes pass through which the film could not be finished quickly enough.

The acting can continue. Michael Pitt is reasonable, especially in the beginning, but in the end only has a weird character. Eva Green and especially Louis Garrel come across well throughout the playing time.

I think it's great that they dare to expose themselves (literally then), it's something different from the Hollywood trend where sex with clothes is the standard.

Bernardo Bertolucci is such a director who interests me, but at the same time I have a lot of trouble with. The previous film I saw of him - Last Tango In Paris - does manage to keep a common thread throughout, here he loses focus a bit.

The image of the time could also have been presented in an interesting way, but hardly anything is being done about the student revolt.

Visually it is all very pleasing. The house offers enough variety and atmosphere.

Sorry about the story I don't understand one iota.

Rather boring film about a bunch of idiots whose curious triangle relationship could hardly captivate me. The first half hour is quite good and promising, but at one point the cabinet of curiosities really pissed me off. It's also because the characters themselves didn't do much for me, especially the typical American cock of rosewater got on my nerves.

References to the films were quite repetitive, but nicely incorporated into the film. Unfortunately I didn't know much about the referenced movies, so it probably affected me a little less than some here. For the rest, I didn't find it visually special, and the soundtrack doesn't even appeal to me anymore.

Pretty annoying movie. 2.0* for the good first half hour and some nice scenes, the rest is boring squared.
