Bah, bad. The dialogues alternate in three languages: English, Gaelic and French. It has a bizarre effect, I must say, especially since French, for example, is still spoken by an Englishman with an accent ... But also the whole thing around that relic is getting more and more bland. The beginning promised something, but it remains quite monotonous and surpriseless throughout the film. I found the ending quite a anticlimax and I didn't even take the few brutal fight scenes seriously anymore. One of the worst movies I've seen this year.

Pilgrimage has beautiful images with the Irish landscape as a backdrop and it also delivers beautiful cinematography. The story itself is quite boring and apart from the beautiful images there is very little to it. Quickly forget this bite.

To prevent Normans from plundering the Catholic Church's property in Ireland, a small group of clergymen are assigned to bring an important religious relic to Rome. They are accompanied by Raymond de Merville [Richard Armitage] and a taciturn but imposing warrior nicknamed The Mute [Jon Bernthal]. Time and again the expedition faces dilemmas due to the friction between military pragmatism and religious spiritualism. The attention to the importance of religion for the expedition and Muldowney's weighty direction make this rather heavy-handed. The emphatic bloodshed doesn't help to lighten the dejected tone. A touch of humor would have been very welcome.
