This solidly made war film now feels quite formulaic, with its somewhat stereotypical characterizations and focus on the tensions between the soldiers and their superiors. Many of the sharp edges from Norman Mailer's book of the same name have been smoothed out. The battle scenes, well directed by Raoul Walsh, make this otherwise unremarkable combination of drama and action still worthwhile for fans of the genre.
