Ônibus 174 plot

On June 12, 2000, a young man in Rio de Janeiro took a city bus full of passengers hostage. What started as an incident turned into a fatal tragedy that lasted more than four hours. The events were captured by dozens of cameras and broadcast live on television. This documentary was made with that footage.

Nice documentary... maybe a bit long-winded here and there. But perhaps that strengthened the Stockholm Syndrome effect, at least for me

What a gigantic blunder action by the officer/soldier... the nice girl had to pay for it

Brazil June 12, 2000...a bus hijacking can be followed live on television, partly because the police forgot to close the crime scene to journalists and the public.
Docu tells the story of the hijacker... a street child who barely escaped a massacre of street children a few years earlier and the Brazilian prison system that does not give a good impression.
The hostage situation itself, at first it is difficult to gain sympathy for this hijacker (demands: free retreat, a grenade and 300 dollars) but when the ultimatum expires a number of surprising events follow....[spoiler ]Stockholm syndrome (?) and then seeing pretty much the most idiotic police action ever on camera.
Street children, overcrowded cells, killer cops and completely incompetent SWAT teams things are going well there.... this affair also got quite a bit of a tailspin in Brazil.
As a documentary, it is somewhat long and not very specific in terms of filmography.
The hostage images themselves are extremely oppressive.

Fairly compelling documentary.

Live images of the hostage situation are interspersed with interviews with people who know Sandro or who have a similar life history. More than sufficient background and explanation is given about the how and why of this tragic case. And of course it turns out not to be an isolated case. The living conditions in which some of these children live are downright dire.

The hostage situation itself is very exciting (I didn't know the outcome until this documentary) and very dramatic. The level of amateurism in the security forces is almost so unreal that you would think it was staged. Unfortunately this is not the case. Heavy duty but opens your eyes.
