Not a particularly exciting espionage thriller that, after the adventure, brings a wish for better cohesion among people.
Merle Oberon fits the espionage picture best, though it's actually more of a political intrigue. Robert Ryan is the clever American who ultimately solves it and inevitably falls in love.
Lacks power.

Berlin Express is a noir thriller set in the political hornet's nest of Germany in 1948. Shortly after the end of World War II, the country has been divided into various political zones, each with its own say. The plot revolves around the search for the missing German diplomat Dr. Bernhardt by a group of travelers who meet by chance on the Berlin Express.

Curt Siodmak's excellent script and believable performances from an international cast. The film features, in descending order, English/American, German, French, and Russian. A wise decision by the production to give the storyline's international character the necessary realism.

The film unfolds on two levels: on the one hand, there's the search for Bernhardt, but on the other, it's a highly political film that questions the state of humanity.

In my opinion, Berlin Express is one of the most fascinating films in Jacques Tourneur's oeuvre. The story unfolds against the backdrop of a ravaged Frankfurt and Berlin. This stream of unique images alone makes this film worth watching. Add the impressive photography and the voiceover, and you get a truly captivating documentary effect.

Finally, it should be noted that the final shot is a brilliant metaphor for the idea that drives the entire film.
