A less ambitious and more direct sequel to the first installment, director Nia DaCosta makes a remarkable contribution. Her previous projects weren't particularly special and seemed primarily focused on the audience, but The Bone Temple almost flawlessly adopts Danny Boyle's stylistic approach, creating something much more idiosyncratic. The innovative camerawork remains intact, the effects are very convincing, and the relatively long running time is never felt. However, the focus on the new characters isn't always as tight, with a rather unbelievable group of cult members blindly following Jack O'Connell's nonsense. Furthermore, several concepts are developed rather half-heartedly (think of the cure) and there's no special finale, but it remains a high-quality, entertaining genre piece that certainly deserves a third chapter.

A surprise. A truly enjoyable film with a great soundtrack full of British classics from various genres and often beautiful images in terms of color (great play with those white towers of bones) and framing. A real pleasure to watch, especially. The plot is somewhat disjointed, and more of a slice-of-life story than a complete narrative, but you do get a good sense of the world. The film occasionally sags a bit in terms of pacing, but often enough it captivates with fine gore and a very convincing Fiennes who humanizes every scene he's in and elevates it. The finale does feel a bit rushed. 4.0*

I thought Part 1 of 28 Years was decent, and I went into this sequel with low expectations. A few positive reviews about this film did pique my interest. Part 2, The Bone Temple, really surprised me, and in a positive way

No spoilers from me, if you've seen the previous films you should definitely see this one.
