Mockingbird Don't Sing plot

"She was little more than a wild animal. And only one woman had the gift to heal her."

When she was one and a half, Katie was locked up by her mentally disturbed parents. They kept her in a small room until she was thirteen. She was strapped to a child seat, where she lived in deathly silence for years. A silence that was occasionally interrupted by atrocities. In 1970, her case came to light and Katie, who was completely emaciated, was transferred to a hospital in Los Angeles. There it was discovered that she had never learned to speak. She was an anomaly... a feral child in today's society.

'' You promised me, remember? If she lived past the age of twelve, we'd get her some help. ''

That girl has acted so well, unbelievable. Many things I saw reminded me of my work with toddlers. Very strange to see that a girl of 13 has to learn things that I teach the little ones. Step by step you see Katie struggling with things from normal society, something that is unworldly for her. I did expect that she would be much more 'wild', I found this not so bad. It's fantastic that such a young actress can perform such a role without words but purely with facial expressions and body language.

Not all credits go to her, the mother also managed to put down a convincing role. Although in the beginning I had a lot of trouble arousing sympathy for her. Katie's neglect and abuse is her overbearing father's fault, which I find odd. And what about the mother? She was there for years and did nothing, so the fact that she is portrayed as a helpless and scared woman doesn't work for me. She was right on top of it. It would have been much more realistic and satisfying if her part had also been scrutinized more closely and she too had been seen as guilty. Why her parents did this remains unclear to me. I didn't see any of this in the movie either. Is her father just a monster and that's that? Or was it because the child had a disability from birth? I found it difficult to 'understand' it, there was just way too little information given.

Too bad, it could have been a lot better. Thrilling and gripping, and unfortunately this was not.

I know what some are going to say how can you give this movie only 1*. It's not because it's a heavy topic that the movie is good, of course.

The direction is just very weak just like everything around it! There are much better movies in this genre like My Sister's Keeper (2009).

1*

Annoying. As far as I'm concerned, these kinds of stories also deserve a qualitatively strong elaboration, and that's what it lacks. The true story is terribly over-dramatized, with one-dimensional characters (think of the father and the rescuers) that come across as caricatured and that there is also a lot of overacting. The girl and her "language teacher" get more than satisfactory from me in terms of acting, and the mother also succeeds, but especially the care providers are not convincing. Officially this isn't a TV movie, but unfortunately it does contain its bad qualities, such as the bad acting and the soap-like twists that are always given to the story.

I'm willing to believe that the girl in care was a number , and that the bureaucracy (still) prevails, but that the care providers don't care and to this extent they only being cold and self-centered I don't like that. Even if it had happened exactly like that, the movie didn't convince me of that. By the way, I wonder to what extent this girl was an exception, I wouldn't be surprised if more children with disabilities in those years were locked up or tied up by their parents (for lack of good care or alternatives) in similar circumstances[ /spoiler].

A sad story that in my opinion deserved a better quality film. 2.5*
