A good film about a family struggling financially after the stock market crash. The film doesn't quite live up to its title, as it's simply more of the same and doesn't really feel like a grand finale. Not that this is a bad thing, though, as the characters remain compelling, and the cast has become a perfect fit. The set design is also still stunning.

And what a finale! Nostalgia abounds, thanks in part to the return of several long-lost characters. It's when Harold [Paul Giamatti], the brother of Lady Grantham [Elizabeth McGovern], visits Downton Abbey in the company of Gus Sambrook [Alessandro Nivola]. It's 1930, and Harold has squandered a large portion of the family fortune through bad investments and the Wall Street Crash. He believes Gus can recoup the money if his sister gives him the required amount. Lord Grantham [Hugh Bonneville] struggles to hand over full control of Downton Abbey to his daughter Mary [Michelle Dockery], partly because her reputation has taken a serious hit following her recent divorce. Penelope Wilton (as Lady Merton) and Arty Froushan (as the eccentric playwright Noel Coward) stand out in this beautifully crafted conclusion to the beloved series. Dedicated to Maggie Smith, who died in 2024, who appears briefly as Violet Crawley during the moving final scene.

The series certainly had a perfect ending back then, but okay, the subsequent films are also quite enjoyable, albeit somewhat redundant. This third one brings everything to a definitive conclusion. There are, of course, too many characters to give everyone a proper send-off, but the film succeeds reasonably well. The plot is alternately funny and melancholic, building to a beautiful final scene. I'm going to miss everyone.
