A decent film about a newlywed couple who organize a party after their honeymoon. Clearly based on a play (the film takes place during an evening in and around the house). It takes a while for the film to really get going, with the mind games being played. Some excellent dialogue and two strong performances from Tessa Thompson and Nina Hoss.

DaCosta is treading on thin ice by translating Hendrik Ibsen's "Hedda Gabler" (1891) into the modern era and adding gender swaps (Løvberg is a woman here). Because of her complex personality (full of contradictions), Hedda is a dream role, but Thompson falls short and fails to generate sympathy. It also doesn't help that Hoss (as Løvberg) and Poots (as troublemaker Thea Clifton) are also guilty of overacting. Ibsen's play was an indictment of classism and sexual discrimination, so it's ironic that the female roles are so poorly portrayed. It looks beautiful, but Ibsen wouldn't be happy about it.

Ouch, a film with chapter titles. That really makes me question my conscience: is that even okay when it's a film adaptation of a play? Or maybe only when there's an actual scene on screen and the curtain occasionally closes? Or is it always pretentious by definition?

As a concept, the film is certainly interesting, with a slightly contemporary version of Ibsen's Hedda Gabler—a play lauded at the time as the female version of Hamlet. Yet it remains a bit labored, perhaps because too many of the tropes are stuck in 19th-century mores—which simply don't work as clearly anymore. Or perhaps the lines in Ibsen's original were as impressive and timeless as those of the tormented prince, but this translation doesn't convey much of that. And perhaps you see it quite differently if you're familiar with the original, but for me this was new, and therefore more of an interesting and beautifully performed piece. But "interesting" isn't exactly the same as "good" or "nice."

Production-wise, it's all spot on, the location is perfectly suited, and the entire cast is appropriately dressed. Perhaps that's precisely why the setting doesn't quite resonate with the present. And a quick scan of Wikipedia reveals countless other versions that, for the truly interested among us, could provide weeks of discussion material. I'll start with Black Debbath's work, and especially their single "Motörheddagabler."

And I'll leave it at that for now.
