Roofman plot

"Based on actual events. And terrible decisions."

Jeffrey Manchester is a former military man who robbed dozens of McDonald’s restaurants across the U.S. in the late 1990s. His string of robberies—reportedly between the ages of 40 and 60—took a bizarre turn when he moved into a Toys “R” Us in Charlotte, where he lived undetected for months. He survived on baby formula and snacks, using a bicycle for after-hours exercise.

Serial robber Jeffrey Manchester (Channing Tatum) escapes from prison and hides out at a Toys "R" Us in a Charlotte suburb. Charmed by a salesman (Kirsten Dunst), he introduces himself under a false name and embarks on a doomed romance. Tatum's charismatic performance almost makes you forgive his character for being a criminal. Almost, but not quite. Dunst is engaging as the love interest, and Dinklage is entertaining as the demanding corporate executive, but the blend of crime drama and romance doesn't work.

A good film about a man who gets caught in a rut after a series of thefts at McDonald's locations. A beautiful, true story with a smart protagonist who, however, makes foolish decisions. Entertaining from start to finish, but sometimes a bit predictable. The cast includes a number of familiar names, and the acting is excellent. Easily 3.5 stars.

A surprisingly powerful (and entertaining) film adaptation of the true story of Jeffrey Manchester, a former soldier who robbed dozens of McDonald's restaurants across the US in the late 1990s. After escaping prison, he lived undetected for months in a Toys "R" Us in Charlotte, where he occasionally struck up a friendship with one of the employees (Kirsten Dunst). Channing Tatum is perfect in the charming lead role, and the film is at times funny, touching, and suspenseful.
