A decent film about a former golfer who picks up his clubs again to earn money for his daughter. A belated and unexpected sequel. Quite funny here and there, and some nice cameos. Ultimately, it's more of the same, and the film could have been a bit shorter.

I watched the first installment before this sequel, and it was a bit too much of a good thing. The jokes are incredibly over-the-top, making them simply unfunny and often even annoying. I always have a certain sympathy for Sandler, and he pulls it off perfectly, despite his lack of comedic timing and the script ticking off all the clichés and remaining uninteresting. It's not all that bad, but that's about it. Ben Stiller has a nice little role. 2.0*.

Sandler doesn't make a film for critics, and for this sequel to Happy Gilmore (1996), he limits himself to recycling and a plethora of cameos to keep his fans happy. Happy [Adam Sandler] has hung up his golf clubs after the death of Virginia [Julie Bowen], is struggling with alcoholism, and has squandered so much money he can barely support his five young adult children. The prospect of sending his daughter Charlotte [Sadie Sandler] to Paris for $300,000 inspires a turnaround. Ben Stiller is funny as the shady addiction counselor Hal L., but the best moments come from the many top golfers (young and old) who effectively poke fun at the sport's dusty image. Otherwise, this is entirely routine fodder for the fans.
