While I thought Panahi's previous film, Khers Nist (No Bears) (2022), was brilliant and one of the best films of the year, this latest one disappointed me. All the layers are gone, and the film is a simple, flat kidnapping moviethat verges on the ridiculous and lacks credibility: in that respect, Lanthimos' film Bugonia, also about a kidnapping, does have the richness and depth you'd expect from such a Panahi film, although they are again similar in their tendency to mislead the viewer (in both films the kidnapped isn't quite the innocent one assumes). Panahi again deals with the oppression by the Iranian regime—the film feels like a vehicle to expose the regime's crimes to the world—and he tries to create a simple good guy vs. bad guy dichotomy. to avoid the evils by raising the questions whether the victims, in their desire for revenge, have not also become evil and whether the regime's executioner is not just doing his job and is not essentially a bad guy, but he hardly succeeds: the victims remain the good ones and in the case of the executioner it is not certain whether he truly means his remorse, which leaves the outcome uncertain.

Mechanic Vahid [Vahid Mobasseri] recognizes in a client [Ebrahim Azizi] the man who tortured him years ago and still appears in his nightmares. He knocks the client down, but then doesn't quite know what to do. Moreover, he's not entirely committed to his business. Therefore, he consults several other victims of "Peg Leg." The tragicomic story resembles a modern, Iranian version of Alfred Hitchcock's war parable Lifeboat. Panahar chooses a lighthearted, ironic approach to reinforce his critique of repressive regimes and delivers another intelligent, entertaining feat. A well-deserved winner of the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival.

For me, this wasn't a cinematic experience that left me on the edge of my seat, nor did it allow me to sense any other kind of emotion within myself. The endless, agitated (Persian-spoken) dialogue was incredibly repulsive. At times, an uneasy sense of dullness crept in. The projectionist had promised beforehand that the film would also be witty. It completely passed me by. No, this wasn't a masterpiece, but an extremely minimal, straightforward story about traumatized people, with extremely limited resources to serve up an extremely sober viewing experience. I understand the petty prize, but objectively, this film would barely score a passing grade.
