Weapons plot

"Last night at 2:17 AM, every child from Mrs. Gandy's class woke up, got out of bed, went downstairs, opened the front door, walked into the dark ...and they never came back."

During the night, several students disappear without a trace in a small town in Florida. This at the same time, namely 2:17. The incident is linked to police corruption and trauma. But religious abuse of power, witchcraft and blood sacrifices also appear to be at play.

The film starts off quite suspenseful, giving you the impression of an intense few hours. However, unlike most films that build tension, this one gradually loses its appeal: partly because the story is told from multiple perspectives, allowing you to understand more and more what's going on, while also offering fewer and fewer surprises. Secondly, it's a kind of zombie film—or a zombie film combined with the horror clown Pennywise and occult magic (the film borrows heavily from other films, even The Shining)—and I've never understood the thrill of people in heavy makeup supposedly tearing others to pieces. A zombie film is always so ridiculous that it becomes more comical than suspenseful, and the audience laughed more and more.

Now, I do believe it's a fairly original zombie film, but even a better zombie film remains a dumb zombie film, just like the zombie itself, mindless entertainment. The film is somewhat similar to Bring Her Back, which is also currently in theaters: it's about a modern witch who performs occult rituals to cure something but in doing so, leads others to ruin. But Bring Her Back is more realistic and, partly because of that, more intense. Admittedly, Weapons is very entertaining and never becomes boring. And perhaps the film says something about our society, where, due to things like disinformation, conspiracy theories, and polarization, we all become a kind of zombie that can be weaponized by an influencer or demagogue.

This itself is not a horror to me.

A good mysterious thriller, but also overhyped.

Sinners remains the best horror/thriller of 2025
