"Hoe vind je zelf dat het gaat?"

The Manager explores relationships in the modern workplace, with a focus on the role of managers. Observations of nine to twelve managers in performance reviews form the basis for the story. The unequal power relationship between managers and their staff often leads to compelling role-playing. In these, both parties play their role in a more or less expert manner. Sometimes the conversations are difficult; according to mutually accepted rules and conventions that cannot be escaped. Most things are said between the lines.

Bakers received permission to film managers head-on during formal performance reviews with employees. She also filmed manager training sessions on conversational skills and training conversations, in which both the instructor and the manager evaluate the course of the discussion. Bakers chose variety in her field of work and demonstrates that such a conversation often follows a fixed, carefully thought-out step-by-step plan. Entertaining, often even amusing, even though it primarily confirms what most people already know.
