A mishmash of various genres is presented at a high pace and with much dedication, but unfortunately director Alex Scharfman does not manage to translate his own qualities to the big screen all that convincingly. The visual effects in particular are wooden and the satirical humor is too easy. Fortunately, Jenna Ortega, Paul Rudd and Will Poulter play convincing characters, who are ultimately pushed into a corner by the scenario. As a result, the original ideas of Death of a Unicorn never fully shine, but it cannot be denied that those ideas are definitely there. The relationship development between Ortega and Rudd is also successful and the events remain unpredictable, but ultimately also somewhat uncontrolled.

The poster looks like fantasy, but it is a horror film with the necessary humor. From the film stable A24, who deliver more alternative gems. Not always successful perhaps, but more original than the average Hollywood film these days. Here too it is a separate story that is interesting in itself. The whole thing sometimes wobbles and the tone is quite unstable. The acting performances are also not the best roles of the cast. But it is enough entertainment. Sometimes that is enough with a film.

Widower lawyer Elliot [Paul Rudd] and his teenage daughter Ridley [Paul Rudd] are on their way to visit a wealthy potential client, the eccentric and seriously ill Odell [Richard E. Grant], when they hit a young unicorn. In a panic, Elliot decides to put the animal's body in the trunk of his car. When they meet Odell, his wife Belinda [Téa Leoni] and his son Shepard [Will Poulter], it turns out the unicorn is still alive. Chaos and occasional bloodshed ensue in this failed horror comedy in which Grant, Leoni and Poulter play their roles as if this were the satirical horror it was supposed to be, which is at odds with the performances of Ortega and Rudd, who act as if they've landed in a bad melodrama. It comes pretty close. The CGI unicorns are also completely unconvincing.
