Dementia is both an urgent and rewarding subject for a film, as society is aging and the risk of developing the disease is very high. At the same time, it's a fascinating disease because it strips away the patient's identity, or rather, everything except the patient's "self," leaving them lost in the world, groping for something to hold on to. This film has little drama or even a story, but it does have a realistic feel, resembling a documentary focused on a single elderly woman admitted to a rather luxurious home. Because everyone in the film is well-meaning, it primarily results in a sweet film about a woman who thinks she's finding new friends while receiving caring care.

All is love in this beautiful but sometimes slow film.

Not entirely realistic, and comparable to the average situation in a Dutch nursing home. Did you really think Woemi had an hour to get a reluctant resident to eat something or take her pills? Keep dreaming.

Agitation and aggression from dementia residents are completely absent, as are depression and gloom. And what if you have to ring a bell for the umpteenth time from a confused resident, or get pinched or scratched while changing them?

Angels don't exist, fairy tales do.

80-year-old Ruth [Kathleen Chalfant] has made a will stipulating that she will move to a nursing home if she needs additional care. Because of Alzheimer's, that moment has now arrived. This compelling, deeply moving psychological drama follows Ruth as her son [H. Jon Benjamin] brings her to the facility and during her first weeks as Ruth tries to find her feet under the guidance of caregiver Vanessa [Carolyn Michell] and physician Brian [Andy McQueen]. Friedland manages to convey complex emotions with minimal effort, and Chalfant is unforgettable. An idealized portrait of care for people with Alzheimer's (it's set in a private clinic where individual attention is given). Filmed on location with real staff members and people with Alzheimer's.
