The year 1864, the Maori colonial wars are in full swing. Haki, a fifteen-year-old half-caste, is traumatized when he is captured by Maori resistance groups preparing a last-ditch battle against the British Imperial Army. Haki is held as a sacrifice and his life seems lost until he is rescued by Kōpū. The teenage girl he befriends claims to be a reluctant medium for a war god.
