India may be one of the fastest growing economies in the world, but this has hardly influenced the inequality within and the narrow-mindedness of Indian society, as director Ghaywan shows in his debut film. I've seen almost a hundred films from India, but this indie remains far removed from the average Bollywood film with its traditional musical interludes.

There is no room for sentiment in this honest story of family honour, corruption and caste differences, simply because the raw life on the banks of the Ganges has no room for it either. Together with the beautiful cinematography (especially in the evening and night shots) and the sober acting, this leads to one of the better films of the year 2015. Contrary to some forum members before me, I am therefore not at all surprised about the favorable reviews.

What a high score this movie gets on IMDB. The stories hardly appealed to me, I couldn't get into them and I also thought it was too much of a soap opera style. Too melodramatic. I think The Lunchbox is a nice movie, but this is not my thing. 2*

A mosaic film of life in the ancient city of Benares on the holy river Ganges. Life and death are central here. I found the burning rituals of the deceased in which the soul was released when the remaining skulls were smashed, especially when they were scattered as ashes in the Ganges. Also visually well done in that respect with nocturnal high fires that were visible from a boat.

How could it be otherwise that the caste system is also being scrutinized. Rather from an amorous level than where one relationship is difficult to sustain, but can be a stepping stone for the other. And what about the heavy-handed police action at the beginning of the film, where corruption and extortion take over the entire film.

A film that plays with traditions on the one hand and modernity on the other. A film that certainly captivated me that the complex Indian society certainly is.
